Share
mobility means any mode of transportation that is shared by users on an
as-needed basis. We generally define shared mobility generally
as transportation services and resources that are shared among users
simultaneously or sequentially. Public transportation, micro mobility (bike
sharing, scooter sharing), automobile-based modes (carsharing, rides on demand,
and micro transit), and commute-based modes (ridesharing) are all examples of
this (carpooling and vanpooling).
Types
of shared mobility:
Public Transit
The cornerstone for much of shared mobility is public transit, which
consists of publicly owned fleets of buses, trains, ferries, facilities, and
rights of way with fixed-route local and express service. For transit agencies,
there is a lot of untapped potential in integrating with, or offering, shared
modes to enhance access to transportation and cut costs.
Micro mobility
Micro mobility refers to a fleet of small, low-speed
vehicles (mostly bikes and scooters) that can be either human- or
electric-powered for personal transportation. Micro mobility is most common in
cities and is used for short travels in places with high connectivity and a
dense population of destinations.
Automobile-based Mode - Carsharing
Carsharing makes a network of cars available to pre-screened
users for short-term usage, with borrowing times measured in hours rather than
days, as is the case with regular car rental. The service is best for
mid-to-long-distance excursions (5 to 20 miles), especially when carrying
groceries or other stuff.
Commute-based Mode - Ridesharing
The most well-known kinds of shared mobility—the original
"ridesharing"—are designed to efficiently transport groups of
individuals with comparable origins and destinations. Carpooling and vanpooling
are noncommercial shared ride arrangements that convey two to ten passengers
and in which the driver is already making the trip.
Advantages
of using shared mobility:
1.
Traveling efficiently.
2.
Fuel usage is reduced.
3.
Transportation costs are reduced.
4.
Creates new employment opportunities.
5.
Emissions of greenhouse gases are reduced.
